South West Transit Corridor Package D Bulk Earthworks Contract

Bulk Earth works comprising of 400,000 cubic metres with 55 metre vertical cutting with berms, material management essential to the success of the project with pavements material for upper zone sourced from steeply dipping layers in the cut surrounded by poor quality materials used in common fill embankments having to be separated. With haulage up to 4 kilometres Komatsu 465 50 ton dump trucks were selected to haul material long distance, utilizing a PC1100 and PC750 Komatsu excavator loading up to 8 trucks at any time testing and programming was essential. Water for construction being identified as a major concern at tender Alexanderson Earthmover came up with a solution to the dry site by laying a high pressure poly pipe line 9 Kilometres to a holding dam on site and pumped water 24 hours a day as required giving the site ample water for construction. With large volumes of material to handle compaction and conditioning of fills to allow continuous placement AE utilized 825G / 825C / 835B Cat compactors with a no failure result in bulk earthworks and upper zone placement of materials. Haulage of water from a centralized holding dam was carried out by 2 x 465 Komatsu 50 ton water carts and supplemented by a 651B Scraper water tanker when required in warmer conditions. GPS equipment utilized on site comprising of a PC 300-8 Komatsu excavator fitted with Top Con GPS maintained all cut and fill batters, a 16H and 14G / 16G Cat Graders fitted with GPS and Millimetre control systems were used for all fill placement and final trim works. Encountering solid sandstone in the cut AE utilized 475-3 Komatsu dozers to rip, separate a stock pile material for use in common fills and upper zone embankment giving best rip penetration and stock pile capacity

• Top soil stripping of Dam foot print and Borrow areas with 631E scraper fleets 60,000m3
• Dam Foot print foundation stripped of unsuitable material to stockpiles 150,000 m3
• Treatment of foundation ready for placement of conditioned clay materials
• Treatment of clay borrow material for Dam wall construction 300,000m3 including excavation load haul and placement on a rotating 24/7 roster
• Conditioning of materials carried out using irrigation methods 24 hours per day
• Treatment of zoned material for Dam wall construction 200,000 m3 including excavate, load & haul with fifty ton Komatsu HD465 rear dump trucks and placement on a 24/7 rotating roster.
